July 29: Beaubien

The next day, as we were breaking camp, a herd of five deer wandered through the edge of our camp, giving us a great chance to observe them up close. We then we hiked through rolling uplands for several hours before descending to Phillips Junction. We ate lunch there and picked up food for the next five days. Everyone ended up with something like eight or nine meals; our packs were stuffed to the brim and as heavy as they would ever be. We then climbed up to Beaubien, where we would spend the next two days. This is a major staffed camp, with something like thirty camp sites and several major programs. Just as we caught sight of Beaubien the heavens opened forth and dumped torrential rain and hail on our heads. After we were settled in, we went to the Beaubien campfire, with considerable entertainment provided by the resident staff. It rained that night, too.
